The Engine House #6 is one of two still-standing buildings designed by John Flynn in 1880, and it was the home to the first emergency squad for the Columbus Fire Department. Located in Franklinton, it was in service from 1882 to 1966 and used as a retail store till 2014. Since that time the building has fallen into disrepair, and although structurally sound, it needed a new roof, new building systems, and significant interior renovations.
The Columbus Historical Society has purchased the firehouse to convert into a permanent museum along with its new headquarters. Meeting rooms, exhibit spaces, and restrooms are planned for the first level, and a research room comprising approximately half the space is planned for the second floor.
Schooley Caldwell has completed phase one of the renovation, which included a new roof, masonry repairs, window replacements. Once fundraising is complete, phase two will create meeting rooms, exhibit spaces, and restrooms on the first level; and a research room comprising approximately half of the second floor.
