What’s it like to work at Schooley Caldwell?
Hear from Tyler Young, one of our newest architects.
What is the most positive change you have experienced since coming to Schooley Caldwell?
The two most positive changes are working on diverse project types and experiencing a positive outlook for the future. SC has a great history and reputation for working with challenging historic preservation projects, but we aren’t limited to only that focus. The firm has a strong portfolio and is open to pursuing new opportunities. Our team is interested in creating landmark places, whether restoring a historic landmark or designing a new one. In summary, I’m not siloed into the same project types and am working on projects with varying degrees of complexity.
How would you describe the culture here?
The culture here is surprisingly relaxed. People feel comfortable expressing differing opinions, and there isn't a lot of ego or hierarchy to deal with. Additionally, the smaller firm size and project diversity make it easier to know what other people are working on, creating a much more open and collaborative environment. The management team is all very approachable. (I really like that there isn't just one firm owner at the top.)
What is the range/type of work you are responsible for, and how does that align with your career goals?
I'm a project architect on two libraries and a historic renovation/addition event space. I am widely involved in everything, including client meetings, budget or estimating reviews, and construction administration, and I still get to work on drawings and details—or help guide other staff to do the same. This is right in line with my career goals. As a recently licensed architect, practicing my project management skills and being a mentor to newer staff is a great place to grow.
